Reconciliation

Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for offenses committed against Him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion.

First Reconciliation (Penance) is usually celebrated in the second grade in the fall. Children are given ongoing instruction about forgiveness, sin, and God’s love in all grades at St. Matthias School and in every year of the Sunday Morning Program.

There is a blessing during Mass to begin the process in October. Preparation for this sacrament is family-centered. Children receive a book to complete at home with their parent(s) and family. There is a parent/child session in November that includes prayer, Scripture and instruction. First Reconciliation is celebrated in December during the St. Matthias’ Communal Penance Service.

If your child is beyond second grade and would like to prepare for their First Reconciliation, contact the parish office at 414-321-0893.
